Cascade Brewery Hobart
The Cascade Brewery is the oldest brewery in Australia and been in operation since 1824.
Established near the Hobart Rivulet to take advantage of the fresh water. The cool climate, locally grown hops and barley and a strong independence makes Cascade a highly successful brewery and a famous Tasmanian icon. The location has to be one of the best in the world for a brewery.
The picture used for the label is H. C. Richter's nineteenth-century illustration of the now extinct Tasmanian tiger.
The two hour Brewery Tour covers the brewery and runs several times a day. A shorter Heritage Tour lasts 60 minutes covers the area around the brewery, gardens and museum.
The Brewery tour has a number of safety requirements. Long pants are compulsory, skirts and short pants are not permitted. Jewellery must be removed and covered shoes worn. A lot of climbing through the brewery is necessary.
The Cascade Brewery Visitor Centre includes a store, museum, function areas, yard and cafe.
Cascade is distinctive among the Australian breweries and unusual amidst breweries worldwide in that is makes it’s own malt from Tasmanian barley. Malts for dark beers and the seasonal range are sourced in other parts of Australia or overseas.
Hops, the female flowers of the hop plant Humulus lupulus are used extensively in brewing for their antibacterial effect and to balance the sweetness of the malt with bitterness. Cascade uses hops from Bushy Park in the Derwent Valley, a very beautiful place to visit. Hawthorn Lodge the original farmhouse for the hop estates built in 1869 and home of Robert Shoobridge now operates as a delightful guest house and tea rooms.
Cascade Premium Lager is an Australian-style lager, hopped with Australian "Summer" hops to give the beer a distinct spicy flavour. Cascade Premium Light a low-alcohol lager a very popular Australian light beer. Cascade Pale Ale, often called "green" or simply "Pale", is an Australian-style lager.
Cascade Stout is a stout beer brewed with roasted barley. Cascade Blonde is a premium lager beer brewed with a blend of barley and wheat malts, then hopped using the "Cascade" Hop to give a light bitterness. Cascade Amber is an amber ale brewed with a blend of three malts.
Cascade Draught is a traditional full strength lager and Tasmania's best selling beer. Cascade Bitter, known as "red", is a bitter lager.
