Frenchmans Cap

Frenchmans Cap in the west of Tasmania, Australia is known for it’s distinctive top that resembles a Frenchmans Cap. An outstanding white monolith making it a popular mountain to climb. The height is 1446 metres.

The three or four day walk has free huts at Lake Vera and a new one at Lake Tuhune. The trail is well marked and easy to follow.  The trail is 46 kilometres long as an out and back.

On the first day you walk about 16 kilometres to Lake Vera Hut. A mix of ascents and bog which has boardwalks to reduce walking in mud and preserving the environment.

It is possible to reach the summit on the second day There is new hut at Lake Tuhune which is 1.5km from the summit so is an option. The ascent from Lake Tuhune takes around one hour.

From the summit of Frenchmans Cap you can see the West Coast beaches of Tasmania and Mt Ossa the highest mountain in Tasmania.

The start is on the Lyell Highway about 55 kilometres before Queenstown. There is a car park but there have been reports of vandalism for cars left while walkers are on Frenchmans Cap.
